Engraving for Enamel with Heather Larson

Add a new dimension to your enamelling with engraved textures!

Silver is one of the most reflective metals and engraving allows us to take full advantage of this. Patterns can be abstract or figurative, fill the entire space or use carefully placed lines to make your enamel shine.

In this one-day course, you’ll learn how to use round and flat gravers to create patterns on metal to add your unique signature to your work. Through demonstrations and one to one instruction, you will explore different types of engraved lines and patterns suitable for enamelling.

You’ll also take home your own graver, made to fit your hand, and a wooden block with thermoloc to hold your work, so you can carry on engraving at home. Heather will make the gravers up before the workshop and show you a video of how it’s done, so you understand the process. Both are included in the cost of the course.

At the end of the day, you’ll know how to shape and sharpen gravers, use different types of gravers, set your working space up for successful engraving, have a set of practice samples to use as reference, and of course the knowledge of how to engrave your pieces ready for enamelling.

Knowledge Required
This workshop is for intermediate to advanced students and isn’t suitable for complete beginners. You’ll need some previous jewellery making experience. Some enamelling experience would be helpful but not essential.

What to Bring
Glasses if you need them for close-up work, an optivisor or other magnifier if you have one, a hairband for long hair, and a packed lunch.
