Kiln-Fired Enamel for Beginners

This one-day course will include an introduction to kiln fired enamel and a chance to experiment with colour and texture. Kiln fired enamel is an exciting technique but is very experimental – applied as powder the results can vary from one piece to the next. A good class for anyone who enjoys colour and would like to learn how to apply it to copper and silver.

The morning will consist of learning the technique by making sample pieces, fired to produce different layers of colour. The afternoon will be a chance to put these skills into practice by either making a main piece or continuing to experiment. Pieces made from enamel will need to be joined with a cold connection (no soldering) so we will take this into consideration when designing a piece that you would like to make. Simple, saw pierced sheet metal works well to add colour to and can be prepared in advance of the class.

Tutor: Gwen Hosker
£90 per person (includes copper and enamel)
(£80 for current weekly students)
Suitable for those new to enamelling, but preferably with some experience in jewellery

Soldering Masterclass

Soldering.jpg

This course is aimed at jewellery students who already have some jewellery and silversmithing experience. Soldering is a key skill within the craft and one which students often say is the area they most fear or need most practice in. This course aims to explain the science behind solder, flux and preparing your metal. We will demonstrate several key soldering methods such as pallion soldering, sweat soldering, feed soldering and using a solder probe. After each demonstration students will have a go at the technique themselves, using pre-prepared pieces of copper. If you would like to brush up on your soldering skills, conquer your fears or have a better understanding of the techniques and science behind them, this course is for you.

Tutor: Olivia Lowe
£80 per person (includes copper samples)
Suitable for those with some experience

“Although I had been making jewellery for several years, I was always a little reluctant when it came to soldering, so decided to do the one day soldering course. I came away feeling so much more confident and was amazed at the various techniques that would help me in making more complex piece… I recommend it to all students, whatever your level of proficiency.”

“I took the Soldering Master Class and my work has greatly improved as a result. I have been working with silver for several years, receiving occasional instruction and doing personal reading. The knowledge that I gained in one day of Olivia’s guidance was at least 5 times greater than in my years of experience. The studio is well-equipped and a good environment for working. I highly recommend Olivia and Meon Valley Studio.”

On this one day course Louisa will show you how to use tiny silver or gold balls to decorate your jewellery. You will learn how to make your own granules and solder them into place using Louisa's own quick and easy methods.

You will learn how to build up a big cluster of granules on a ring, create little clusters all around a ring band in different areas, fill gaps and adorn the edges of a setting. The day will be technique focused, using pre-made silver samples (included in the course fee). You can then make these into finished pieces of jewellery after the course in your own time if you choose to. It's a great skill to know and a beautiful addition to your own designs.
